TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) : is an English language test designed specifically to measure the everyday English skills of people working in an international environment.
The TOEIC Listening and Reading test measures the ability to listen and read in English. The TOEIC Listening and Reading test is a paper-and-pencil, multiple choice test. There are two separately timed sections of 100 questions each.

TOEIC Listening and Reading test has set the standard for assessing English-language listening and reading skills needed in the workplace. TOEIC Speaking and Writing test assess language skills that are used in daily life and the workplace. Since the first TOEIC test was implemented in December 1979, the test has been adopted not only throughout Japan but around the world as the global standard for English communication skill assessment. The test is administered in some 150 countries around the world.

Normally, what we call TOEIC is the TOEIC listening and reading with paper-based test. The maximum score on TOEIC is 990 points.

TOEIC Test Format

TOEIC test measures the ability to listen and read in English.
There are two separately timed sections of 100 questions each.

Listening part – maximum score is 495points, Reading part – maximum score is 495points

Listening comprehension -45 minutes
The entire listening test will last approximately 45 minutes.

Part1. Photographs – 6 questions
Hear four statements about a picture and select the one statement that best describes what you see in the picture.

2. Question and response – 25 questions
Hear a question or statement and three responses in English and select the best response to the question or statement.

3. Short conversation – 39 questions
Hear some conversation between two or more people and you will be asked to answer three questions about what the speakers say in each conversation. Select the best response to each question.

4. Short talks – 30 questions
Hear some short talks given by a single speaker. You will be asked to answer three questions about what the speaker says in each short talk. Select the best response to each question.

Reading Comprehension – 75 minutes
The entire listening test will last approximately 45 minutes.

5. Incomplete sentences – 30 questions
A word or phrase is missing in each of the sentences. Four answer choice are given each sentences. Select the best answer to complete the sentence.

6. Error recognition– 16 questions
A word, phrase, or sentence is missing in parts of each text. Four answer choices are given the text. Select the best answer to complete the text.

7. Reading Comprehension – 54 questions
In the part you will read a selection of texts, such as magazine and newspaper articles, e-mails, and instant messages. Each text is followed by several questions. Select the best answer to complete the text.

There are 7 parts and examinee are given total 120 minutes for listening and reading parts.

  • Personnel: recruiting, hiring, retiring, salaries, promotions, job applications, job advertisements, pensions, awards
  • Purchasing: shopping, ordering supplies, shipping, invoices
  • Technical Areas: electronics, technology, computers, laboratories and related equipment, technical specifications
  • Travel: trains, airplanes, taxis, buses, ships, ferries, tickets, schedules, station and airport announcements, car rentals, hotels, reservations, delays, and cancellations

Advisable scores in TOEIC

Good TOEIC score is necessary to applicants who want to get a job, finding better job or aiming for promotion.
Especially jobs that are offered internationally require high scores in TOEIC.
A reasonable score is above 700 points, a good score is anything above 800 points, and a great score is anything above 900 points.
